Guardians Of The Galaxy: Mission Breakout! Isn’t Canon Towards The Marvel Universe

This coming Saturday too since this has been scramble of theme park content to write about, we got Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! opening this Memorial Day weekend on May 27th and same day as Pandora: The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Media previews are on going now and here’s is some things we have learned before the official grand opening.

Mission Breakout! will featured many elements from the cinematic universe but, it will exist in it’s own separate universe and not canon towards the Marvel universe that we all know of. Portfolio Executive, Joe Rohde of Walt Disney Imagineering explained more about this:

“It is distinctly meant to be its own universe,” said Joe Rohde, a creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, who helped create the ride. “The universe will grow and expand and there are elements in there that will link to a dimensional universe. We really tried to not simply reflect on an existing narrative but to extend narrative and expand it.”

The attraction takes place in The Collector’s Fortress which is a complete layover of the classic The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in where The Collector has held up the Guardians prisoners and the guests to assist Rocket Raccoon to bust them out.

“It’s a whole new story,” added Dave Bushore, VP of franchise creative and marketing at Marvel Studios. “The idea that you have the Collector and you have all these other characters that showed up in Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and other portions of other films, and other things that go on across the Marvel Universe, it’s a whole story unto itself.”

The 2008 buyout of Marvel has been a financially and phenomenal success for The Walt Disney Company to share and tell the backstories of fans’ favorite Marvel characters and now at different Disney theme park locations worldwide. Even the recently opened Iron Man Experience at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and now Mission Breakout! in Anaheim, California at Disney California Adventure.

“What’s cool about this is the idea you can take all the fun stuff going on across the universe from all the different lines of business—the films, everything—and link it to [the rides] in a cool new way and a wholly new experience,” said Bushore.

Once you ride Mission Breakout! it is completely filled with TONS and dozens of Easter Eggs that fans will recognize from the Marvel Universe with some examples like a animatronic Cosmo the Dog, dark elf armor, and even some familiar looking props in the Disney park too.

“The idea that those easter eggs can be refreshed and renewed with all new stuff keeps the story fresh and new and keeps the story totally on its own,” Bushore said.

Director/Writer, James Gunn had a huge involvement with the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction despite him confirming he isn’t in the actual attraction himself but, his involvement was still really important to make the Guardians real and believable for the guests to see and encounter.

“In order to really believe they are the Guardians, you really do have to have the same directorial attitude about body movement, vocal performance, everything. That’s hard to substitute,” said Rohde. “It’s almost like an artist’s hand in a painting. You’ve got to have these people in there so that it really has that hand. So the action you see, the performance you see, all of that goes back to Gunn and his way of working with the cast to get the Guardians to be the Guardians.”

The attraction will showcase a lot of the Guardians in the attraction as they tell a pretty awesome and cohesive story from beginning towards exiting through the gift shop. In one of the show scenes, Rocket will explain of what you got to do to help bust out the Guardians before entering your elevator. There will be six different ride experiences with different songs playing each time you ride and trying to escape the fortress.

This also includes Baby Groot from the recently released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that be shown inside of the show elements when your breaking out from The Collector.

“There’s something about Guardians of the Galaxy,” said Rohde. “There’s an energy to it. There’s an irreverence to it. It’s really useful because it just comes out of nowhere. Some of those hero brands have a different vibe about them. This is something that can come out of nowhere and basically install itself with an atmosphere of fun.”

Mission Breakout! will be also on going during Summer of Heroes event at Disney California Adventure starting on May 27th including some members of the Guardians of the Galaxy- Starlord, Gamora, and full sized Groot, Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man and many more for guests to hang out with.
